Coney Mountain

After completing Goodman Mountain, we hopped in the car and drove a mile or two down the road to the trailhead for Coney Mountain.  This small lot was full when we passed it this morning on the way to Goodman, with cars parked along the road, but the crowds had thinned out by the time we arrived and there was plenty of parking available now.  It was almost 2:15 pm when we signed the register to begin our hike.  I wasn't concerned about the time, since this is such a short hike: 1.1 miles to the top with about 550 feet elevation gain.  Even with our slow pace, we summited in less than 45 minutes.

Frankie always enjoys bog bridges.  But who doesn't, really?

There was beautiful light suffusing the forest.  Even though most leaves were already down, the beeches hold their coppery leaves enough to make everything glow with autumnal glory.

The final approach...

The summit of Coney Mountain blew me away: such a tiny little mountain with such huge views!  We located two summit markers first, then explored the summit, checking out view from different sides.  We could see Goodman Mountain to the north, and off to the east, the High Peaks.

We stayed at the summit for about 40 minutes this time.  As with Goodman, we mostly shared it with other folks, but no more than two at a time, and enjoyed a stint with it to ourselves.  The hike down was very quick; we made it back to the car in less than 25 minutes.

I knew that the three mountains in the Tupper Lake Triad were selected for their accessibility and view.  All three are great little mountains!  Arab might edge out the others for being further from the highway, making the trail quieter (plus the fire tower) but Coney has the best rocky summit and the best views.  We had a great day hiking out hiking.
